Food NW Awards 2011

THE winners of the Fine Food Awards 2011, which celebrate the best fine foods in the Northwest, were announced by TV chef Nigel Haworth, including 28 products from across Cumbria.
Organised by Food NW, which is managing the region’s Food and Drink Growth Programme with support from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the awards recognise the best fine foods produced across the region, from cakes, cheeses, and chutneys, to bacon, bread and butter. This year’s awards saw nearly 400 products entered by 132 companies from across, Cumbria, Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside.
Four Cumbrian companies celebrated a triple win, taking home three Food NW Heart Awards each for their products. Cranston’s Quality Butchers in Penrith for its Sausage and Apple Lattice Pie, its Dry Cured Streaky Bacon and its Chicken Liver Pate; Mawsons of Bailey Ground Ltd in Seascale for its Farmhouse Butter, its Double Cream and its Chocolate Orange Ice Cream and Mr Vikkis in Penrith for its Hot Lime Pickle, its Harrys Smoking Ranch Sauce and its Chilli Jam.
Penrith-based Deliciously Wild won two Food NW Heart Awards for its Wild Venison Loin Steak and its Oak Smoked Wild Venison, along with Furness Fish and Game in Grange Over Sands for its Luxury Potted Crabmeat and its Wild Game Mix and Dales Traditional Butchers in Kirkby Lonsdale for its Pork and Mr Vikkis Chilli Jam Sausage and its Pork and Mr Vikkis Chilli Jam Pie.
Five Kendal-based companies picked up accolades, including Agnes Rose, which won a Food NW Heart Award for both its Blackberry and Mint Vinegar, and its Damson Vinegar. Similarly, Ginger Bakers for its Chocolate Brodie; Heaves Farm Veal for its Rose Veal Fillet Steak; Kendal Jacksmiths Flapjack for its Damson Syrup and Raisin Flapjack, and Westmorland Pudding Company for its Sticky Toffee Pudding

Meanwhile, Brackenfell Rare Breed Meats in Penrith secured a Food NW Heart Award for its Traditional Cumberland Sausage and also its Pork Steak, as did; Claire’s Handmade Ltd in Wigton for its Sweet Piccalilli; Deer n Dexter in Penrith for its Venison Loin Steak; Sarah M in Sedbergh for its Courgette Chutney; Hawkshead Relish Company Ltd in Hawkshead for its Damson Jam, and More? The Artisan Bakery in Staveley, for its Sourdough Miche. The Great North Pie Company in Stockport was named as the Fine Food Awards overall winner and ‘Supreme Champion’ after scooping two Food NW Gold Heart Awards for its Steak and Oxtail Pie and Cheese and Onion Pie.
